Cleaning Your A/C Evaporator Coils Safely

Getting Access to the Coils

First, you need to locate the access panel. Then remove it to make visible the evaporator coil. If required, check the A/C owner’s manual for further details.

• Turn the A/C off.
• Remove any fasteners or screws to loosen and remove the access panel.
• Put the screws and panel in a safe spot so they won’t get lost.

Once you found the coils, use water from a garden hose. Applying the water directly to the coils, rinse them thoroughly. With the help of a brush with soft bristles get rid of any lingering particles.

Liquid Soap and Baking Soda

To remove minor accumulations of dirt from evaporator coils, mix some liquid soap with baking soda. Apply the solution to the evaporator coils. Let the solution soak in and loosen debris for three minutes. Apply more of the mix if needed. Then, with a brush specially fabricated to clean A/C coils, remove the loose material and dry it off carefully with a clean cloth or paper towel.

Once you are done, reassemble the air conditioner and reconnect power to the condensing unit.
