As the holiday season kicks in, we start to unpack the Christmas lights, ribbons, wreaths, and many other decorations to match our homes with the occasions. But, before you start bringing in the festive cheer to your halls, be sure your aesthetics are not jeopardizing your home comfort, your HVAC equipment or your energy bills! Here are some of the most common decorating mistakes that we need to stop doing.
Cover the Thermostat
Even if it sounds tempting and you will find lots of beautiful ideas on Pinterest, don’t decorate your thermostat! This part of your HVAC system is essential for delivering comfort to your home. It needs to be exposed to read the indoor temperature of your home accurately.
Heat the Thermostat
Don’t put heat sources near your thermostat. That includes candles, twinkling lights, heaters, and any other heating device. Surrounding your thermostat with things that emit heat will only produce readings, which in turn will cause your HVAC equipment to run when it isn’t needed. Consequently, you will end up with uncomfortable temperatures or worse, high energy bills! Play it safe, place any of these elements on the opposite side of the room from the thermostat.
Don’t Block Your Air Vents
Make sure your air return and supply vents are clear from obstacles and mostly, leave them open. Closing them will “suffocate” your HVAC system and force it to work harder and longer.
By avoiding these common HVAC decorating mishaps, you can keep your home comfortable and your family and guests cheerful this holiday season.
